About Us

Thomas McGee Group provides practical solutions for complex risk issues through expertise in commercial insurance, surety, employee benefits, personal insurance, and third-party claims administration.

Our goal is not to simply sell you insurance, but instead to be your Risk Consultant. We know that every organization has risks that ultimately affect two very important things: your balance sheet and your people. We focus on implementing strategies to minimize these risks, while also customizing a transparent risk finance program that is cost effective and sustainable.

After 100+ years in business, we are established as one of the premier insurance brokerage and risk management firms in the Midwest. We are committed to constantly evolving, advancing and innovating to stay in front of client needs and industry developments.

We often get asked, “Who is Thomas McGee?”

Thomas McGee was the visionary who started the company more than 100 years ago. He and his sons laid the foundation for what would become one of the premier insurance brokerage and risk management firms in the Midwest.

McGee was born just outside Boston in 1859. He moved to Kansas City in 1881 and eight years later, went to work for Bernard Corrigan at the fairgrounds and racetrack that were located just north of the river. Through that connection, several years later he became the personal representative of Ed Corrigan, Bernard’s brother, who was in charge of one of the leading racing stables in the country. In fact, Ed Corrigan named one of his horses after McGee. The horse, aptly named “McGee”, sired several famous race horses including “Donerail”, the 1913 winner of the Kentucky Derby.

McGee Brothers

Through his relationship with the Corrigan brothers, Tom began his career in the insurance industry with Corrigan, Madden and McGee, an agency that opened in 1910. Eventually, Thomas’ son Joseph purchased Corrigan’s interest and it soon became a family business with his other two sons, Frank and Louie, joining the firm.

Thus, Thomas McGee & Sons was born. In those early days, the company was already an industry leader. It counted Harry S. Truman and some of the largest stockyards in the nation among its clients.

In 1995, the firm changed to a limited liability company and became Thomas McGee, L.C., and in 2017 the name was changed to Thomas McGee Group to reflect the companies continued growth – growth that was marked with the launch of our St. Louis branch office, also in 2017.

A lot has changed in 100+ years, but the principal of hard work, and the vision for client service that we were founded on still remain.

At Thomas McGee, service is in our DNA.

Service to our clients. Service to our associates. Service to our communities. Not only do we provide significant financial support of organizations having positive impact on our community, we also provide opportunities for our employees to give their time via our Community Care Force. Led by the motto, “Stand Up. Stand Out. Give Back”, the Community Care Force comes together to volunteer and participate in meaningful events and fundraisers. We use our voices, hands, feet and other resources to build relationships and to be advocates for the positive progress of our community. We do this individually – on our own time – and also as representatives of Thomas McGee. We know that leading by example is the best way to lead.
